Rousing reception for Balochistan's boxers

QUETTA – Hundreds of people waving flags accorded a rousing welcome Pakistan gold and silver medal winners in the 11th South Asian Games in boxing Niamatullah Achakzai and Muhammad Waseem when they returned home here on Saturday afternoon at the Quetta International Airport.

Niamatullah Achakzai and Muhammad Waseem were garlanded and rose petals were showered on them as they came out of the airport lounge.

Prominent amongst them who received the boxers were Balochistan Sports Minister Mir Shah Nawaz Marri, President Balochistan Boxing Association Syed Faqeer Hussain, PML-Q central Additional Secretary General Naseebullah Kakar while a large number of local players and people thronged the Quetta Airport to welcome national heroes.

Talking to media on the occasion, Naimatullah and Waseem said they were very happy on their achievements at the South Asian Games.
They said that they got medals for the country and they would work hard in the same spirit to win more medals in future.

“A boxing event is going to be held in India and I hope we will bring medals for the country again,” said gold Niamatullah.

Silver medallist Waseem said justice was not done with him in the final as he was winning the contest against an Indian boxer. However, he said they were determined and would achieve more success for the country in upcoming events.

Balochistan Sport Minister Shah Nawaz Marri said the players of Balochistan were talented and needed opportunities to show their talent. He announced cash prizes of Rs 200,000 each for both the boxers and Rs 50,000 for bronze medallists. He also promised to give them full financial assistance like athlete Naseem Hameed who brightened the name of country in the South Asian Games. He said the boxers would be encouraged in every possible manner.

The minister also said that he would also request the governor and the chief minister of Balochistan to announce a financial assistance for both the boxers.

Later, the boxers were brought to the residence of Syed Faqeer Hussain in a splendid manner where lunch was arranged in their hounour.
