Dwyer to rejoin Pakistan for World Twenty20

Karachi: Australian-born Pakistan fitness trainer David Dwyer, who recently quit his post, will temporarily rejoin the team before the World Twenty20 Championship in the Caribbean later this year.

Dwyer, who has overseen a massive rise in the fitness of Pakistan's cricketers, will link up with the side in Lahore from early April to begin work. The agreement between the former rugby trainer and the Pakistan Cricket Board, however, is only for the duration of the tournament and he is likely to return to Australia at the end of it.

Dwyer was hired during the coaching tenure of Geoff Lawson in 2007. When Lawson was sacked in 2008, Dwyer also wanted to quit but was convinced by former skipper Younis Khan to stay on. His fitness work with the national team has been widely acknowledged by the board and players themselves and he became an immensely popular figure within the side. Younis in particular was a staunch advocate of Dwyer and has not only praised him in the press but also the cricket pitch during games. Once he bench-pressed his bat after reaching an ODI century, in reference to Dwyer's efforts. He did some press-ups when he reached another, again a nod to Dwyer’s training regimes.

Dwyer, who had been urging the PCB to improve substandard facilities before his good work is undone, is said to have wanting to quit for personal reasons.
