Mumbai, Jan. 31 : Cricket Australia (CA) and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have failed to identify Sharad Pawar's successor as ICC vice president in their meeting which was held in New Zealand on Thursday, it is learnt here.
According to the sources in Australia and New Zealand, a seven member committee-three from Australia, three from New Zealand - and an Australian "independent" member (Roderick Eddington) interviewed Australia's former Prime Minister, John Howard, and Sir John Anderson, NZC's former chairman (1995 to 2008).
However, the committee could not come to a conclusion and may take two more weeks to finalise for the ICC's vice president post, which will be vacant in June when current vice president Sharad Pawar takes over from David Morgan as ICC chief.
"The three representatives from each board showed weaknesses of their opposite candidates and described the strength of their own aspirants", the source further added.
Cricket Australia was represented by its CEO James Sutherland and Directors Wally Edwards and Geoff Tamblyn, who was already in New Zealand with under 19-team.
NZC was represented by its CEO Justice Vaughan, chairman Alan Issac and one director.
Going by the rotation policy adopted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) a few years ago, it’s the turn of either Australia or New Zealand to nominate Sharad Pawar’s successor as vice presdient first and president in 2012.
CA's ambitious chairman Jack Clarke was very hopeful of the post, however, his dreams were shattered. Howard's name took precedence over Clarke's owing to the latter's "closeness" with Sharad Pawar and another big-wig of the Indian cricket, it is reliably learnt here.
In Cricket Australia, being run by a Board of Directors, the president's word is NOT final and binding on the office bearers, unlike the BCCI, where the president has the final say.
