Quid Azam Trophy : Riffatullah, Aamir break world record

KARACHI: Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) cantered to an easy six-wicket victory over Karachi Whites in the RBS Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship Group ‘A’ match at the UBL Sports Complex here on Sunday.

After bowling the home side for 338 in the second innings, ZTBL lost just four wickets in reaching their target of 174. Opener Inam-ul-Haq led the way with a robust 72 off 66 balls that included four sixes and five fours.

Earlier, Zohaib Khan completed a grand double for the visitors by taking 5-57 with slow left-armers after Karachi Whites resumed at 209-3. Zohaib was the top-scorer in ZTBL’s first innings of 397 with 143.

Habib Bank, meanwhile, consolidated their position at the top of Group ‘A’ with a five-wicket success over Pakistan Customs in Islamabad. The bankers now have collected 60 points.

Our Sports Reporter adds from Lahore: Riffatullah Mohmand and Aamir Sajjad made first-class history on Sunday by putting together a world record second-wicket partnership of 580 as Wapda drew against Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) at the Sheikhupura Stadium.

Riffatullah, the 33-year-old opener, and the 28-year-old Aamir both slammed their career-best scores to help Wapda pile up a huge 671-2 after resuming the final at 300-1 in reply to SSGC’s first-innings total of 466. Riffatullah remained unbeaten 302 — the championship’s first triple ton this season — off 465 balls with 34 fours and one six, while Aamir contributed 289 (373 balls, 36 boundaries).

The Riffatullah-Aamir stand bettered the second-wicket record held by Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya (340) and Roshan Mahanama (225) who added 576 against India in that famous Test at the R. Premadasa Stadium in 1997 when the hosts posted the highest-ever Test total of 952-6 declared.

Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) were denied victory at the Gaddafi Stadium by a stubborn display from Lahore Shalimar who reached at 257-8 in the second innings.

Similarly, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) held out for draw against PIA in Gujranwala.

Meanwhile, Group ‘B’ leaders Karachi Blues received more good news on Sunday when defending champions Sialkot and Rawalpindi — fellow contenders for the final — both tasted defeats. The result effectively means Karachi Blues are now through to the Dec 20-24 final

Hosts Sialkot went down by 37 runs against Islamabad while Faisalabad whipped Rawalpindi by 181 in Faisalabad. In the remaining two games, Multan trounced Peshawar by an innings and 124 runs and Lahore Ravi beat Abbottabad by five wickets.

Karachi Blues head the Group standings with 57 points, followed by Sialkot (39) and Rawalpindi who have 36.
