Pak adopt caution in announce U19 WC provisional squad

Karachi : Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has delayed naming their preliminary 30-man squad for ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2010 as PCB was supposed to name preliminary squad until November 15. Cricdb has learnt that there were some players who are not eligible to play Under-19 World Cup due to their ages were considered for the youth World Cup in New Zealand but to avoid the overage contention Pakistan is ensuring the ages before announcing the provisional squad.

Selectors however announced Under-19 team for a tri-nation series involving Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh but there have been some cases of overage players making it to the national Under-19 circuit after which it was decided to take steps to ensure that only the players who are eligible to play in the World Cup are to be in the squad.

“We are not aware about the ICC deadline but PCB had gave us the the deadline of November 15,” said Chief Selector Iqbal Qasim. Chief selector however announced the squad for the Under-19 tri-nation tournament but considering the age prospect – for which they were unaware, selection committee handed over the names to PCB to ensure the ages of the selected players before revealing the names.

The Under-19 World Cup will take place in New Zealand from 15 to 30 January. Defending champion India will open their campaign against qualifiers Afghanistan at Bert Sutcliffe Oval, near Christchurch on the opening day of the competition, with former champions Pakistan facing the West Indies in Palmerston North and 2008 finalists South Africa taking on Ireland in Queenstown.

Pakistan defeated the West Indies in the final in 2004 and in 2006 despite a low target of 110 for India, Pakistani bowlers devastated India to become the first country ever to defend the trophy and become back-to-back champions of the tournament.

The 16 teams are split into four groups with Groups A and C being based in and around Christchurch, Group B teams playing their matches in Queenstown and Group D games taking place in Napier and Palmerston North.
