All Pakistani boxers knocked out of Milan

KARACHI: Pakistan’s painful mission in the World Boxing Championships in Milan, Italy, ended on late Saturday night when the last hope Rashid Fateh also crashed out after losing to Daniel Matellon Ramos of Cuba in the light-flyweight bout.

It was a one-sided battle which ended in the 6-1 victory for the Cuban. Rashid, who had got bye in the first round of the preliminaries, was left incapable to defend himself against Ramos after receiving heavy blows to his head before the Swedish referee Stefan Nordin stopped the fight in the first round, declaring Ramos as victorious with 6-1.

Earlier, the other day, in what was a one-sided featherweight bout the Asian gold medallist Mehrullah Lassi was given a lesson by the German Sandro Schaer who won the bout 11-1.

Schaer started the fight, winning the opening round 3-0. It was in the second round that lyari-born Mehrullah scored his lone point as the German won it 6-1. In the final round, the 2002 Asian Games gold medallist also failed to show any remarkable fight-back qualities, losing it 0-2, thus conceding the fight 1-11.

Mehrullah’s defeat must have disappointed his fans who were waiting anxiously for his fight against the German on international comeback after three years. Mehrullah had entered the ring in international circuit after serving two-year ban imposed on him for using cannabis during the 2006 Colombo South Asian Games.

The other day, in a low-scoring flyweight bout, the Bulgarian Aleksandrov had defeated Muhammad Waseem 2-0.

It was only in the first round that Aleksandrov scored the two points while the remaining two rounds went away without any point scored by either boxer.

Wasim had beaten Oraz Avzalshoev of Tajikistan 13-7 in the first preliminary fight. Wasim is the only Pakistani boxer who has been showing signs of improvement as he not only claimed bronze medals in the Kings Cup held in Bangkok and Ahmet Comert International Boxing tournament held in Istanbul early this year but also managed to earn victory in his first round bout against Tajik boxer in the world event in Milan.

After the star boxer Mehrullah, the other real disappointing performance came from the young Aamir Khan in the light-welterweight who conceded his first round bout to the debutant Generbert Basadre of Philippines 2-5.

Middle weight boxer Nisar Khan had also lost his first round fight to Henry Biembe of Congo 13-15 in the first round.

The performance of the Pakistani boxers in Milan should be an eye opener for the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) and it must come up with a more solid strategy to prepare a fighting pool for the next year three vital assignments including the South Asian Games, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
