Pakistani boxers to train in Korea

ISLAMABAD: Asian and Commonwealth Games gold-medallist Meherullah will be back in contention after serving a year-long doping ban as Pakistan Boxing Federation Thursday finalised a 12-man squad for the upcoming training tour of South Korea.

The Pakistani pugilists will stay in Korea on a 45-day training-cum-competition tour likely to start in the middle of May, said the PBF Spokesman Ubaid Awan. Pakistan Sports Board has earmarked Rs. six million for the tour of these boxers to South Korea where they will compete against pugiligists from the host country plus those from China, Thailand, Philippines etc.

The selected boxers are currently training in Karachi under the watchful eye of camp commandant Ghulam Hussain Patni with Ali Bux, Arshad Hussain, Abdul Majid, Liaquat Ali and Secretary PBF Muhammad Akram Khan helping him in coaching matters.

Olmpian refereee/judge Ali Akbar Shah Qadri will be in charge of boxers team during the training tour of South Korea. Five boxers have been replaced from the preliminary list of prbables for the tour.

The boxers given the final nod for the Korean training tour are:Rashid Fateh and Nadir Bloch in 48kg, Muhammad Waseem in 51kg, Muhammad Hussain and Ali Muhammad in 54kg, Meherullah and Qadir Khan in 57kg, Tariq Zia 60kg, Arshad Hussain 64kg, Nadir Khan and Dur Muhammad 69kg and Nisar Khan 75kg.

PBF Spokesman Ubaid Awan said that the Korea-bound party is awaiting formalities such as final green signal from Korea, visas etc. before embarking on the tour most likely in the middle of May. Pakistani boxing squad will compete in Asian Boxing Championship in China late June after the trip to Korea, he said and added that PBF President Doda Khan Bhutto has also written to Pakistan Sports Board for acquiring the services of Cuban boxing coach a gentleman named Francisco.

An earlier report had said that up to a dozen Pakistani boxers are set to start a training tour of South Korea from next week. Pakistan Sports Board is helping Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) to send these 12 boxers on the training tour to Korea, it has been announced here.

Those selected for the tour are Muhammad Wasim, Rashid Fateh, Abdul Waheed, Nadir Khan, Arshad Hussain, Qadir Khan, Syed Muhammad Hussain, Adnan Hussain, Muhammad Nader Khan, Muhammad Nisar, Usman Butt, and Noman Karim.

Pakistan Boxing Federation has reportedly requested Korean Boxing Association to arrange bouts with Korean boxers during the training.

The duration of the tour is also likely to be slightly increased as Boxing team needs international exposure to participate in competitions aborad.
