IPOH, April 12 (Bernama) -- India beat Malaysia 3-1 to silence 4,000 odd local hockey fans and lift the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup at the Azlan Shah Stadium here today.
in the third position match at the end of the first half the score was 2-1. In the second half Pakistani players produced the better game but they missed too many open chances to score a goal. Richard Patrick scored the first goal from New Zealand in 12th minute on penalty corner and Joy Baker scored the second goal in 14th minute.
The only goal was scored from Pakistan by Shakeel Abbasi in 35th minute on penalty corner. Pakistan team took five penalty corners, while New Zealand secured three.
Pakistan team will be reached back to home on 14th April at 07:50pm at Lahore Airport.
The defeat to India was the second in the tournament as India had also beaten Malaysia 3-0 in the round robin match earlier while for Malaysia, the defeat also meant that Malaysia's attempt to lift the cup in their third attempt was not futile.
Malaysia, having ended up as runner-up in 1985 and 2007, showed great determination to end that drought by moving into the attack right from the start and could have taken the lead as early as the second minute but despite beating Indian goalkeeper D'Souza Adrian, Hafifihafiz Hanafi shot wide.
That near miss proved costly as Arjun Halappa slammed the ball home during a goal mouth melee to give India the lead in the 8th minute.
Stunned by the goal, the young Malaysian side sprang into action and three minutes later were level on terms when Azlan Misron knocked in the equaliser in the 11th minute.
The lead however did not last long as Prabhjot Singh restored India's lead before the break with a well struck shot that beat goalkeeper S. Kumar in the 20th minute.
Not contended with the 2-1 lead, the Indians came back after the break looking even more hungry for goals as they continued to launch attack after attack, so much so that it looked inevitable that Malaysia were going to concede another goal.
The inevitable goal did come in the 41st minute when Shivendra Singh's powerful strike left Kumar gasping for air.
Apart from lifting the title, the Indians also swept three other novelty awards in the tournament.
Arjun Halappa won the Best Player of the Tournament award while penalty corner specialist Sandeep Singh swept the Top Scorer award and Man-of-the-Match awards.
Malaysia's only consolation was when goalkeeper Kumar was adjudged the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament.
Malaysian coach Tai Beng Hai said though his boys lost in the final, they had met the target of qualifying for the final.
