Pakistan Cricket : Quadrangular T20 offers attractive cash spur

Lahore : The Twenty-20 cricket tournament being played in Toronto from October 10 carries a total cash prize of Canadian Dollars 100,000, with the winning team to get $ 60,000. “We are offering attractive cash prizes for the finalist teams and notable performers of the event,” said Nauman Nabi Ahmad, chairman Sports International Marketing (SIM), the organisers of the 4-nation tournament which also involves Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and hosts Canada.

The runner up team will receive Canadian $30,000 while the remaining $10,000 of the total cash prize will be awarded to players for individual achievements.

The SIM chairman said that all is set to stage the event in a befitting manner at Kings City ground on the outskirts of Toronto, where a makeshift stadium has been built to meet International Cricket Council’s playing standards.

“We were just handed over a ground and we erected all the necessary facilities including media box, commentators box, hospitality boxes besides renovating the existing club house as proper dressing rooms for the participating teams,” Nabi added.

The title sponsors are Al-Barakah Properties who have a great interest in sports specially in cricket. “The tournament is being organised to provide high quality cricket competition to expatriates of South East Asia now residing in Canada, especially in Toronto,” he asserted.

Answering a question he said a lively pitch has been prepared and thrilling cricket will be watched in the five day tournament with back to back matches. “Cricket fans are excited about this event which will mark the return of Pakistan team to the North American continent after a gap of almost eight years,” he said, and disclosed that most of the tickets have already been sold out.

He said one ticket will be valid for two matches to facilitate cricket lovers who will have ample time to watch their favorite teams in action. “For example someone watching Sri Lanka’s can also enjoy the following match of Pakistan, with just one ticket,” he said.

The chairman said the event will be made an annual feature, and next year efforts will be made to include the world’s best teams including Pakistan.

“This year’s moot may not be a monetary gain for us, as we spent a lot of money on creating necessary facilities, but we are happy that cricket is finally returning to Canada,” he added.

He said the matches will be shown live in Pakistan and other parts of the world on a private channel, adding that the tournament will be a good opening for Pakistan team to resume international cricket after a big lapse since the postponement of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.

The SIM chief dispelled the impression that cold weather is not cricket-friendly. “It is as good a time for the game as any cricket series played in early winters in England or in Pakistan,” he observed.
