Youngster overlooked for National Twenty20 Cup

KARACHI: Just weeks after finishing as one of the top scorers of the prestigious Pentangular Cup, local youngster Shan Masood suffered a huge heartbreak on Tuesday when he was ignored by Karachi selectors for the much-awaited RBS National Twenty20 Cup.

Shan, 20, scored 363 runs at 45.37 in the Pentangular Cup and also did well in the ongoing National One-day Cup while playing Habib Bank (HBL).

But apparently that wasn’t enough to impress local selectors, who overlooked him while selecting Karachi Dolphins and Karachi Zebras — which will represent the city in the Twenty20 spectacle that gets underway here from February 28.

In spite of being young and prolific, Shan — a former Pakistan Under-19 team vice-captain — was not even considered for a pool of 40 players that form the two Karachi teams. The left-handed opener returned last year from England after completing his A-levels there just to focus on his cricket career.

According to sources, Shan was overlooked because the local selectors were more interested in making “quota-based” selections. Sources said that the selectors are more inclined to pick players from some influential clubs and ignored a promising youngster like Shan because he is not associated with any major club of the city.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi will lead Karachi Dolphins in the Twenty20 Cup. Pakistan leggie Danish Kaneria will lead the campaign of the Karachi Zebras in the event.
