ICC board approves ANZ Stadium for international cricket

Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) board, which met in Dubai has approved the ANZ Stadium in Sydney as an international venue. Home of the RTA SpeedBlitz Blues Twenty 20 outfit, record crowds have flocked to ANZ Stadium since cricket debuted in 2002.

"Following a recommendation from the ICC Chief Executives’ Committee, the ICC Board has approved the ANZ Stadium in Sydney as an international venue," ICC said in a statement.

The ANZ stadium in Sydney, the home ground of New South Wales Blues, was completed in March 1999 at a cost of A$690 million to host the 2000 Summer Olympics. It was originally built to temporarily hold 110,000 spectators but with the reconfiguration work in 2003, reduced the capacity to 82,000 approximately which is the second largest stadium in Australia after the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“There’s compelling logic behind plans to stage one-day internationals at ANZ Stadium,” ANZ Stadium CEO Ken Edwards quoted at the stadium's official website as his saying. “It’s only a matter of time before we see crowds of 70,000-plus in Sydney at ANZ Stadium,” said Edwards.

“The undoubted success of the Twenty20 at state level shows that international fixtures would be massively popular. Cricket NSW understands the huge potential of growing crowds and attracting new fans, particularly in Greater Western Sydney,” added Edwards.
