Jerry Yu appointed head of medical jury

KARACHI - The Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) has appointed Dr Jerry Yu of Chinese Taipei as a head of the medial jury for the Shaheed Benazir Bhutto International Boxing Tournament which will be held here January 1 to 9 at Benazir Sports Complex Karachi, the Pakistan Boxing Federation announced here Wednesday.
Medical Jury will consist of Dr Jerry Yu as a chairman and Pakistan Sports Board official doctor and secretary of Asian Sports Medicine, Dr Waqar Ahmed as a secretary while Dr Mohan Lal (KPT), Dr Mubbashir (KPT), Dr Zia Uddin Baloch and Dr Danish will be the other members of the jury.
In the meantime, the PBF purchased new digital ‘scorning system’ for the championships in which as many as twenty nations have already agreed to participate.
The PBF has purchased the new international standard digital scoring system which was already approved by the AIBA from Switzerland for the supervising important bouts in the competition.
The new computerized scoring system will be able to generate tournament draws and has four side screens and all spectators will be able to see the latest score during the bout.
The International Boxing Association (AIBA) already handed over this type of latest scoring system with laptops and other boxing gears in 2007 to the PBF but the new officials, who took over the reins of administration recently, have not yet received them.
Under the AIBAs ruling, it is mandatory to install the system and no international event could be held without the system which has cost around Rs one million rupee to the PBF.
The PBF has also purchased two more new padding machines from Australia for the preparation of upcoming SAAF games, Asian games and the said machines has reached Karachi for use at the national camp now in progress here.
A number of high profile boxing officials from abroad and national boxing heroes have been specially invited to witness the nine-day boxing extravaganza.
Some of those, who have been invited, are AIBA president Dr Ching-Kuo Wu, the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) president Jianping Chang, the light welter-weight world champion Aamir Khan of UK and the 1988 Seoul Olympics bronze medallist Syed Hussain Shah.
Lyari-born Syed Hussain Shah is currently imparting training to the Japanese boxers in Japan.
