UAE all set to host ACC Twenty20 championship

Dubai : Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) is all set to organize Twenty20 Championship among top cricket associates from the Asia which will be played at three different venues in the UAE from November 22 to 30.

United Arab Emireates (UAE) have been drawn in Group A with Afghanistan, China, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. The Group B comprises Nepal, Malaysia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain.

The tournament provides the international debut of Al Dhaid Cricket Village, a seven-ground facility near the centre of the UAE, which is another Abdul Rehman Bukhatir project following Sharjah Cricket Stadium and Dubai Sports City. Al Dhaid hosts 10 of the tournament’s 38 matches including a semi-final. ODI grounds Sharjah Cricket Stadium and Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Stadium are the other venues, with Sheikh Zayed hosting the Final on November 30th.

UAE will take on Singapore at the Sharjah stadium while Afghanistan meet China at Al Dhaid Cricket Village and Oman clash against Bahrain at the Zayed Cricket Stadium on the opening day of the tournament that has attracted 12 teams.

The top three teams from this tournament will join Bangladesh, China (being the host nation), India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for the cricket tournament at the 2010 Asian Games to be held at Guangzhou, China. Cricket will be played for the first time at the Asian Games and the decision to approve a proposal to include cricket in Guangzhou was taken at the Olympic Council of Asia’s General Assembly in Kuwait.

Afghanistan and Oman are the joint reigning champions of the ACC Twenty20 Cup. The script could well change this years with all the teams going all out for the coveted spot in the Asian Games.
Each team will play every other team in its group once, and the top two teams from each group will progress to the semifinals. There will be ranking finals to determine the position of each team.

Group A: UAE, Afghanistan, China, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.
Group B: Nepal, Malaysia, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Bahrain.
