Pakistan hands lifetime bans to former top Olympians hockey players

KARACHI : Former Pakistan captain Mansoor Ahmed and ex-national team manager Naveed Alam have been given lifetime bans, the country's hockey federation said on Friday.

The executive board met in Karachi on Friday and found Alam guilty of misappropriating 2.5 million rupees ($31,000) when he was Pakistan manager and coach last year.

Ahmed was charged with posing as a federation official to obtain visas from the United States embassy for a private team.

Alam has denied the allegations while Ahmed has declined to comment. Both said they would contest the bans in court.

"It is a sad day for Pakistan hockey but the board after studying all available evidence has decided to impose life bans from all hockey activities on Mansoor and Alam," federation president Qamar Zia told a news conference in Karachi.

Ahmed, a goalkeeper, was a member of Pakistan's gold medal winning team in the 1994 Champions Trophy and World Cup. Alam, also a former national team player, was Pakistan's manager at last year's Beijing Olympic Games.

Pakistan, once a powerhouse in hockey, has fallen prey to internal politics and bickering and has not won a major title since 1994.
