‘Hectic schedule to prepare boxers for big event’

KARACHI, April 30: Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) President Doda Khan Bhutto is confident that the local boxers will be well prepared for the International Boxing Tournament, to be held in Karachi during August.

“They (boxers) have a hectic schedule ahead of them before the high-profile Benazir Bhutto Shaheed International Boxing which is being scheduled for the month of August,” Doda told reporters on Thursday.

Doda said that 12 pugilists will leave for South Korea on May 6 to attend a hectic training camp there. “The boxers will return home on June 2 and will leave for China on the 6th to feature in Asian Boxing Championship which starts the very next day,” he added.

“We have been contacted by our counterparts in Turkey for combined boxing training camp in Istanbul. So after the Asian Championship, the boxers will go through another training camp in Istanbul from June 18-30,” informed the 27-year-old official.

“In the month of July our pugilists will go through another month-long training camp in Cuba,” he added.

“So I think our boxers will be well prepared to put up a brilliant show in the International Championship we will organize here in Karachi.”

He added that gold medallist boxer Meherullah is doing well and may feature in the Asian Boxing Championship next month. “The two coaches, Ali Bux and Arshad Hussain, will inform us after the training in South Korea where our boxers stand. So the squad for the Asian Championship will be selected according to the inputs of the coaches.

However, Meherullah performed brilliantly in sparring but has a little problem in fitness which I believe he will overcomesoon,” he disclosed.

“Mohammad Waseem has been performing well for some time. Few other good boxers have come up and I believe they could bring glory for the country.”

Waseem, earlier this month, clinched a bronze medal in the King’s Cup in Thailand and later bagged another bronze in Ahmed Comert Boxing Championship in Istanbul. He received Rs50,000 from Doda Khan as acknowledgement of his brilliant efforts.

The 12 pugilists selected for South Korean training camp after sparring are Rashid Fateh (48kg), Nadir (48kg), Mohammad Waseem (51kg), Ali Muhammad (54kg), SM Hussain (54kg), Meherullah (57kg), Qadir Khan (57kg), Tariq Zia (60kg), Arshad Hussain (64kg), Dur Mohammad (69kg), Nadir Khan (75kg) and Nisar Khan (81kg).
