Foreign boxing teams to visit Pakistan: Doda Khan Bhutto

KARACHI: President Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) Doda Khan Bhutto said foreign teams will come to Pakistan if we hold international boxing tournament here.

Doda said, “we have good relations with other boxing nations and if we invite them here for tournaments they will definitely come.”

He said that PBF have an international boxing tournament on cards for August this year under the banner ‘Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Shaheed International Boxing Championship’. “What we need is an NOC from our government,” Doda the cousin of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto said.

Foreign players were reluctant to come to Pakistan after the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team. Even Pakistan’s Tennis Davis Cup tie with Philippines was shifted from Lahore to Manila after

Philippines showed concerns about the security of their players.

“We must call teams from foreign countries to play here. That will diminish the atmosphere of insecurity among sportsmen. Government must spend money and organise tournaments. That can be the only way to remove fear of visiting Pakistan,” he stressed. “Through sporting activities we can bridge the gaps between nations,” Doda said.

He said that they were palnning to organise the said tournament at Expo Centre, Karachi. “KPT Sports Complex hall is not that big. And we think that Expo Centre will serve the job perfectly. That is also a brilliant place from security point of view,” he said.

He added that they have a master security plan for the tournament. He further said, “hopefully we will get NOC from the government as the present setup has affinity towards sports. Moreover, PSB Director General Amir Hamza Khan Gilani has assured us that he would do his best to convince the concerned authorities to give the NOC for the tournament.”

He said that long term planning is required for this purpose. “You see South Korea is eyeing top performance in Asian Games which they will host in 2014. They are hosting teams of different sports in order to prepare their powerful contingent in Asian Games 2014,” he said.

South Korea is inviting teams from countries that will partcipate in Asian Games 2014 one by one. “We also need the same kind of planning to deliver in such tournaments. For that we need government’s moral and financial support.”
