Karachi : Pakistani leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has set his eyes on overtaking Abdul Qadir and becoming the country's most successful spinner in the forthcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.
Kaneria needs 17 more wickets to surpass Qadir's record of 236 wickets in 67 Tests which is the best by a Pakistani spinner.
Qadir incidentally is at present the chief selector.
The 28-year-old Kaneria, who has taken 220 wickets in 51 Tests, said he was keen to become Pakistan's most successful spinner and would aim to accomplish this feat in the two Tests against Sri Lanka.
"It is a target which is firing me on now and if the selectors give me a chance to play the Tests, I will go for this record," Kaneria said.
The leg spinner meanwhile was again ignored by the selectors for the one-day squad announced for the first ODI against Sri Lanka to be played this month.
Kaneria said he was determined to prove to the selectors that he could be as successful in one-day cricket as well.
Pakistan's most successful spinners are a handful with Saqlain Mushtaq having taken 208 wickets in 49 Tests, followed by Iqbal Qasim who took 171 wickets in 50 Tests and Mushtaq Ahmed who captured 185 wickets in 52 Tests.
Kaneria said he wanted to be recognised among the best spinners in the business in recent times.
"I have got some good practice in domestic cricket and it is going to be an interesting series against Sri Lanka," he said.
Kaneria said Lankan mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis would be a key figure in the coming series but was confident that the Pakistani batsmen would tackle him well.
