The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced schedule and teams for the Pentangular Cup - First Class Tournament, starting from October 25, with some notable changes in the format to make the tournament more competitive.

Earlier this year, in the previous season of Pentangular Cup 2007/08 was set to identifying fitness and performance of players for their selection in a challenging upcoming home series against Australia, which however was postponed by the Australia due to the security and safety concerns. Though, this 2008/09 season initiated with the premier first-class campaign will also identify the best performance ahead for the home series against India next year.

Tournament’s six matches, which would be played at Karachi and Lahore center will be broadcasting live at a local sports channel. For the very first time in Pentangular, the top two teams of the competition will be combating in the Final on November 24 at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Bugti Stadium in Quetta and Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar also have been set up to host whereas two matches in Karachi, two in Diamond Cricket Ground of Islamabad and four including final in Gaddafi Stadium of Lahore.

Younis Khan has ruled out of the national first-class campaign because of his commitments with the South Australia, therefore Umer Gul would be leading the NWFP with Yasir Hameed the deputy. Pakistan veteran batsman, Khan, earlier before national Twenty20 decided to skip his first Sheffield Shield game in Australia and will be available for sensational national Twenty20 campaign and for the next month’s four-nation T20 in Toronto. Younis was scheduled to play for South Australia’s opening game against Victoria on October 14.

Due to the jagged consequences in the previous season of Pentangular Cup, mainly team like Balochistan – who hadn’t even won a single match, the suggestion by the top officials to split up the 75 players, thus nine players from Punjab and one from Sindh have been included to strengthen the Balochistan region, with Misbah ul Haq to lead the region, Abdur Rauf the promising fast bowler, Gulraiz Sadaf, Bilal Khilji, Saeed Anwar Jr, Saeed Bin Nasir, Kamran Hussain, Azharullah, Muhammad Irshad.
